Living with Stargardt's DiseaseUpdated a year ago

We made a small series on YouTube for questions about Stargardt's, you can watch it here.

The biggest risk with Stargardt's disease is not the impact on vision, it's the potential impact on one's self-esteem. There are folks with many vision impairments (some more severe than SD) that have done it all.

It's important to start from a very practical place. Give yourself the tools, accommodations, extra time, habits, ADA enforced accommodations, etc. that allow you to be successful. It's a learning phase. Before you pass any judgments on what you can or can't do, give yourself all of the advantages.

The real trick is getting comfortable with being uncomfortable - resourcefulness, assertiveness, creativity, resilience, etc. are vastly more valuable than a few lines on the eye chart. Be willing to embrace adjustment, awkwardness, an uncomfortable situation, and you'll come out way ahead. We learned a lot from a young age, facing challenges that others will not face until late in their adult lives.
